I have had a large vegetable and herb garden for years and have used trellises to maximize growth for many of the vine plants as well as to stabilize plants like peppers and tomatoes. They have worked extremely well to enhance the vertical growth of the plants thus leaving adequate room on the ground for plants such as cantaloupe and watermelon, which can be too heavy to grow vertically. What I had never thought of until my wife mentioned it several years ago was the use of garden arbors in the vegetable garden. She thought it might make it easier to get to the interior of the garden if I used the arbors to create a path and they would still provide vertical growth.

So I am now in my second year of using a series of metal arbors in my vegetable garden and love it. As I have gotten older I have been able to create a small path so I’m not stepping over or tripping on vines and plants to get to the interior of my garden. I am also able to pick and harvest the plants easier since they are still growing vertically. I do still use trellises as well but have really enjoyed the function of the arbors as well as the added beauty they bring to the garden.

Fencing is an important feature of a garden that is to be perceived as an outdoor room. Plant materials can eventually provide the walls, but fencing encloses the space immediately. The best solution is to use both materials, fencing and plants so that over time the fence disappears and all that is left are lush green walls. So now that the walls are built with fencing, the garden room is beginning to take shape. The next decisions are important as well. Plant materials, water features, and placement all must be carefully considered in order to create an effective outdoor garden room. No one wants his/her creative effort to look bad.

Garden structures put the finishing touches on an outdoor room that is done well. These are elements of the garden add height and diversity. They also make it possible to grow certain kinds of plants that would other wise be groundcovers. Garden structures such as trellises, arbors, and gazebos allow plants to climb so that their beautiful foliage and flowers are more easily viewed. Other structures help with growing plants and storage and most outdoor areas need both

A couple of years ago my wife and I decided to invest in a greenhouse for our family. I had gardened before in a traditional tilled vegetable garden but had never even experimented or been around a green house. We took a look at a lot of greenhouses and really liked the Rion green houses and ended up purchasing one of those. It took a little bit longer than they said to put together but once it was together and everything done it has been great to work in.

Our backyard is the center of the entire neighborhood as all our kids friends tend to come over and check out what we are growing at any given time. We are known on the block as the family with the cool hobby green house and the fresh vegetables we have year round. Because we live in a temperate region we can use the greenhouse all year. If we lived in a colder climate I think we would need a thicker walled growing house but the Rion works very well in our area. Since we bought a larger house we can use this one for many years before we out grow it.

Looking for an outdoor bonsai that looks delicate and tender? Then you want the European Beech Bonsai. This outdoor bonsai will actually hold on to its old leaves for most of the winter. This way, it can protect its buds from the cold and the harsh winter weather. One of its interesting features is that it has very dark bark and very deep green leaves. In fact, it is the darkest of all the beech bonsai trees. However, while some bonsai are hardy and make good trees for beginners, the European Beech Bonsai is not a good tree for those just starting out. Instead, only those who have experience growing bonsai should tend it.

The European Beech Bonsai is often grown in the upright style. In this style, the bonsai grows straight up and down, and it’s quite common for bonsai to be grown this way. The trunk is visible and tapered, and it is generally thicker at the bottom and thins as it grows. Branches start at about a quarter of the way up the tree. The bottom branches are longer than the top, making the upright style bonsai resemble a normal tree. However, upright bonsai do not have to be symmetrical, and you can have the branches alternate on either side as they go up the tree.

I have built and bought greenhouses and I can definitively say that installing greenhouse kits is far easier than building them. That is not to say that there is not great satisfaction from pointing to a green house that you have built from scratch and saying, “I did that!” If you have a lot of time to do the research, find a plan that will work for you with detailed instructions including a good materials and cut list, then I say go for it! If not, you might want to consider a kit.

Either way you will also need to find the right greenhouse accessories to go with your grow house. These might include a heater if you are planning to use your greenhouse in the winter months or live in colder climates and need heat in the early spring and late fall months. You will also need to look at ventilation and circulation accessories to make sure you are moving the air and getting the maximum potential out of the house. Make sure you have more as opposed to less as it is always a hassle to add once you are finished. Kits should come with enough vents for the size you purchase.

With the onset of raised beds that can be used to plant flowers, herbs or vegetables and some fruits, it is becoming easier and easier to have your own garden no matter where you live and in very small spaces. Even for those of you who desire to have cedar raised beds, there are some great stackable styles where you can plant up to fifty four plants using what is called a seed hole and pulling plants out the front of the planter as well as planting on the top. It is a great and unique idea.

I love the fact that a garden bed kit is really inexpensive relative to what it costs to till up half a yard and get it planted. It also has much better dirt for great growing because you put the kind of dirt you want to pout in it and it doesn’t break your back with all the bending and such. The stackable beds come to you and it is extremely easy to plant and work around. I highly recommend using a cedar bed for its economic and environmental pluses.
